The Advantages of Laser Eyelid Surgery

There are many advantages of laser eyelid surgery over the traditional surgical methods. These advantages include, no tissue cutting, a minimum of bleeding and decreased risks, no generalized anesthesia is needed, and healing occurs faster, patient experiences minimal downtime, it is an ideal way to fix laxity in lower eyelid skin, and also is the ideal way to fix laxity of skin in the “crow’s feet” area. When laser surgery is performed on eyelids, it assists in the tightening of the skin from the inside.
Eyelid surgery done in the traditional manner is still effective but is an old procedure, involving the cutting of the skin area of the patient’s eyelids. Scalpels and knives are used and bleeding is often a result that could easily prevent the doctor from getting a good view of the area. These traditional methods frequently lead to scarring, which is always a matter for concern. Long recoveries are common following surgery; bruising and swelling around the nose and eyes is common during this period and may last for many weeks. One disturbing result is that, in time, the eyes could appear hollow, and this negates the whole purpose of the surgery. Another surgery will be needed later to correct this effect.
The CO2 laser is the beam commonly used in laser eyelid surgery. This is a preferred method over the traditional one because it considerably reduces the amount of scaring after surgery. The beam is able to greatly reduce bleeding by cauterizing blood vessels which assists the doctor as it gives him an unobstructed view during surgery. Surgery proceeds much faster, it is more productive and safer for the patient.
Following the laser surgery, the patient recovers much faster than after traditional surgery, even though similar side effects may be experienced. Any scarring and bruising that may be experienced are severely reduced.
Laser eyelid surgery is still fairly new, and as a result more people are still using traditional surgical methods for eyelid surgery, but its acceptance is steadily growing because patients are learning that it is an even more effective method of achieving the desired results, and it has fewer side effects.
