Recovery from Laser Blepharoplasty
May 27th, 2010 by admin
Laser blepharoplasty is an increasingly popular procedure for rejuvenating the appearance of the eyes. Whether for droopy upper lids, or “bags” in the under eye area, those who have had the procedure are thrilled with the youthful, natural-looking results this surgery achieves when performed by a skilled plastic surgeon. In addition, the minimally invasive nature of laser blepharoplasty results in much less post-operative bruising, swelling or discoloration, making it easier for you to resume your day to day life sooner. Though every patient’s experience will vary somewhat, a few general guidelines will help you to prepare for the best possible recovery.
Most doctors agree that recovery from blepharoplasty takes between ten days and two weeks. Treating your eyes with care during this time can reduce the risk of scarring and enhance your satisfaction with the final results of your surgery.
The First Week After Surgery
Laser blepharoplasty recovery is described by many patients as being quite easy. Although you will probably wish to stay home for the first two or three days, you can move freely about your house, watch tv and eat as you would normally.
During the first week after your surgery, it is extremely important to follow your doctor’s aftercare instructions. Sensations of tightness or soreness you may experience after your surgery will be relieved by the painkillers prescribed by your doctor ahead of time. Protect the eye area when showering, and do not rub vigorously. Avoid using makeup on the eyes for at least a week, until your sutures are removed. Itching or dryness around the eyes will be soothed by using artificial tears. You’ll also need to wear eyeglasses rather than contact lenses.
After the first 3 days, swelling will go down tremendously, and most patients report that they can resume non-strenuous daily activities within a few days to a week.
The Second Week After Surgery and Beyond.
Typically, patients are able to return to work after a week. Your stitches will be removed seven to ten days after your surgery, after which point it’s safe to resume wearing eye makeup. It’s natural to become excited about the results of your surgery at this point. The majority of swelling will have gone down, and you’ll be able to admire the alert, vibrant appearance your eyes have already regained. Over the next few months, the healing process will continue, and you’ll notice that the appearance of the eyes continues to improve.
